You need to fail more
You need a higher tolerance for failure.
You need the ability to fail without internalizing it & feeling like you yourself are a failure as a result of failing.
Failing is necessary and inevitable.
We potty trained our twins this weekend.
Yes - two toddlers at the same time. And, to answer your follow-up question, yes, I drank a margarita on Sunday night.
Imagine if, the first time one of them had an accident, we threw in the towel on potty training.
Imagine we said "clearly this is a mistake. They’re never going to get this. Let’s go back to diapers. We’re terrible parents. They’re going to be pooping in their pants on their wedding day.”
You probably would tell us that was a bit dramatic and a slight overreaction, right?
You would tell us that we have to be patient, that these things take time, that we didn’t fail as parents, and to stick with it, right?
Of course you would because you know that perfection is impossible and chasing it leads to disappointment.
To succeed, you have to fail.
It’s the cost of doing business.
The people who are successful are the people who are willing to fail again and again because they knew that the only way to truly fail is to give up.
The difference between people who are successful and those that aren’t is that the people who succeed were willing to fail at least one more time.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again:
You’re not a failure because you failed.
You’re only a failure if you never start again.
Because the guarantee of quitting is that you’ll never get there.
So just like you would tell me with potty training, I’ll tell you:
Be patient. These things take time. You didn’t fail. Stick with it.
And just keep swimming.
To your health,
Jeff
